Last year, an article about Java on Haiku was written to show the possibilities of this language to run games or applications on Haiku.
Today, we will review The Abbey of Crime which is an old isometric graphics adventure game written in Java. The first release of this game was done in 1987.
The story is about William of Occam - a Franciscan friar - and his young novice named Adso who have to discover the perpetrator of a series of murders in a medieval Italian abbey.
In this article, you will learn how to install and play that game on Haiku.
To download the game, go to the below URL:
https://www.abadiadelcrimenextensum.com/en/the-game-2
Then select "The Abbey of Crime Extensor" to download the game's archive:
Once the archive has been downloaded, open the rar file and extract it into a folder in the "non-pacage" folder:
You should have the below files available:
In order to make the game playable, open a Terminal in the folder of the game and apply "execute" permissions on the various shell scripts' files :
We are ready to go:)
Before launching the game, you can open the user's manual in PDF format to familiarize with the gameplay:
The user's manual is available in English, French, Italian, Polish and Spanish.
To launch the game, open a Terminal, go into the game's folder, and launch the game's script:
cd /boot/home/config/non-packaged/apps/TAOC
./TheAbbeyOfCrimeExtenseum\(English\).sh
The below warning messages are visible, but it will not be an issue to run the game:
I've just noticed a few lags in the sounds when the game is running, except that the gameplay is ok.
The game will display the below main welcome screen:
Hit return to start the game.
If you hit Esc key, you can select the sounds you would like to ear, the type of control, and the fullscreen mode or not:
At the beginning of the game, William and Adso are in front of the Italian's Abbey to start their adventure.
They are welcomed by a monk, who explain them that a murder has been committed:
The abbot of the Monastery will give more information on the way it happened.
During the first meal, William will be presented to the rest of the monks:
To move forward in the game, you will need to find the various clues of this murder case.
One of the first clue will be a parchment to have access to the map of the Abbey.
For that go upstairs:
When the parchment is identified, only Adso will be able to take it:
Move William back in order to have Adso in front of the parchment:
Once the parchment has been taken, it should be displayed inside the inventory - at the bottom of the screen.
Now the map of the Abbey will be available when you hit the Return key:
At the beginning, only a limited area will be displayed on this map.
But once you will discover new areas, the map will extend accordingly:
You can now discover more about this adventure!
Before quitting, you can save the game by hitting the Esc key, and select a free slot:
This game is a good example that you can run Java games or applications under Haiku.
